a Dictograph Master Station, a high-end office intercommunication system from the 1930s to 1940s. Unlike standard telephones of the era, this was a "private" system used for hands-free communication between executives and staff within a large office or building.

Info & Description

  • The System: The Dictograph (patented in 1907 by Kelly Monroe Turner) was a precursor to the modern office intercom. It allowed for "loud-speaking" (hands-free) conversation via a sensitive microphone and speaker built into the wooden housing, though it also includes the handset shown for private calls.

  • The Controls: The toggles on the front allowed the user to connect directly to different "sub-stations" (other offices). Each switch corresponds to a specific line. The red switch usually served as the ringing/signaling key or a priority line.

  • Build: These were often manufactured in England (by Autophone) for the Commonwealth markets, including South Africa. They are characterized by their solid wood (often mahogany or oak) cabinets and Art Deco-style Bakelite handsets.

Estimated Value: R600 - R1,200
