0237 - Vintage Railway Hand Signal Lantern

LOT SOLD

Opening Bid: 1 ZAR

CLOSING BID

201 ZAR

a  Vintage Railway Hand Signal Lantern, specifically used by the South African Railways (SAR).

These lanterns were essential communication tools before radios. Workers would use them to signal train drivers and other crew members, especially at night. The large "bullseye" convex lens was designed to magnify the light from the internal oil/paraffin burner, making signals visible from a distance.

Key Identification Features
Markings: If you look closely at the chimney or the glass lens, you will likely find the embossed initials SAR or SAS.
Lens Type: This features a convex bullseye lens.
Burner: Image 3 shows the original oil/paraffin burner and wick mechanism still inside, which is a big plus for collectors.

Estimated Value:

R800 - R1,500
