LOT SOLD (STC)
A Thomas Organ & Piano Co. Pump Organ - Woodstock, Ontario, Canada.
Historical Context
The company was founded in 1875 by Edward G. Thomas. These instruments were common in North American homes throughout the late 19th century until radios and gramophones became more popular. Based on the company's timeline, this specific organ was likely manufactured between 1895 and the early 1900s, after the firm was renamed to include "Piano Co." following Thomas's death.
Key Features
- Parlor Style: Features characteristic late 19th-century Victorian design with high ornate fretwork, mirrors, and small shelves.
- Mechanism: It operates via two foot treadles that pump air through internal metal reeds.
- Stops: The circular knobs above the keys are "stops" that control the volume and tone of the music by opening or closing different sets of reeds.
- This organ is not tested. We suggest a bit of restoration to bring it back to its perfection.
Victorian parlor-style design crafted from rich, dark-stained wood.
- Top Crown: Displays ornate, asymmetrical fretwork, geometric carvings, and decorative side finials.
- Middle Section: Houses a built-in central mirror with a curved frame, flanked by two small candle shelves and intricate wood-cut panels.
- Console Area: Features a standard black-and-white keyboard beneath a row of circular pull-stops with gold lettering.
- Lower Body: Contains a wide, decorative wood grille below the keys, a solid lower modesty panel, and two patterned metal foot pedals at the base.
